CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — It’s a robot unlike any other: inspired by the world’s fastest land animal, controlled by video game technology and packing nifty sensors — including one used to maneuver drones, satellites and ballistic missiles.

The robot, called the cheetah, can run on batteries at speeds of more than 10 mph, jump about 16 inches high, land safely and continue galloping for at least 15 minutes — all while using less power than a microwave oven.

It’s the creation of researchers at the Massachusetts of Technology, who had to design key elements from scratch because of a lack of or shortcomings in existing technology.

That includes powerful, lightweight motors; electronics that control power for its 12 motors; and an algorithm that determines the amount of force a leg should exert during the split second that it spends on the ground while running — the key to helping the robot maintain balance and forward momentum. An onboard computer organizes data from various sensors and sends commands to each motor.

“This is kind of a Ferrari in the robotics world, like, we have to put all the expensive components and make it really that instinctive,” said MIT professor Sangbae Kim, who leads the school’s Biomimetic Robotics Lab that designed the robot. “That’s the only way to get that speed.”

Insight gleaned from the design of their prototype could have real-world applications, including the design of revolutionary prosthetics, wearable technologies, all-terrain wheelchairs and vehicles that can travel efficiently in rough terrain much like animals do, Kim said. There are hopes the robot will be able to be used in search and rescue operations in hazardous or hostile environments where it’s too risky to send a human rescuer.

“When the robot is running, at every step, we calculate the appropriate amount of the force to the legs so that the robot can balance itself,” said MIT research scientist Hae-Won Park, who wrote the complex algorithm used to control the cheetah, which weighs around 70 pounds — about the same as one of its female feline counterparts.

Sensors inside the robot measure the angle of the leg and that information is sent to an onboard computer that also organizes data from the Inertial Measurement Unit, or IMU, which is also used to maneuver drones and ballistic missiles, Park said.

The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The military research arm is also funding a similar robot being developed by Boston Dynamics. The company says its version is powered by an off-board hydraulic pump and uses a boom-like device to keep it running in the center of the treadmill.

Crafting the cheetah robot took five years of designing, testing, tweaking and plenty of confidence to ignore those who said electric motors aren’t strong enough to propel a running mechanical cheetah powered by batteries.

Researchers had to exercise a lot of patience during test runs. The robot broke dozens of legs manufactured by 3-D printers and reinforced with Kevlar strips and carbon fiber.

The results?

Strong, lightweight components that made untethered running possible, including a carbon fiber-and-foam sandwich frame that can absorb the forces generated by running and jumping.

Some off-the-shelf components, including an Xbox controller for maneuvering the robot and wireless Internet communications for sending commands to the mechanical cheetah, also came in handy.

Each leg is propelled by three motors that can generate powerful forces at slow speeds.

Still, researchers continue to tweak their prototype, looking to add additional sensors that would eventually make the robot autonomous.

“In the next 10 years, our goal is we are trying to make this robot to save a life,” Kim said.

Three years after his death, a witness in Apple lawsuits is Steve Jobs. But this does not necessarily mean good news for the company.

The company will go to trial next month in a major antitrust lawsuit the company faced since Steve Jobs died. The e-mails of Steve Jobs will be very important to the case, as they already were in the last two lawsuits Apple was part of.

Lawyers often tell company executives to be very careful of what they say in e-mails for fear they will end up in a courtroom as evidence. Steve Jobs’ e-mails are a mix of threats against the company’s opponents and financial promises for potential partners. It is these e-mails that have made Steve Jobs a witness against his own company even after his death.

A professor at the Rutgers School of Law, Michael A. Carrier said:

“He was a genius in terms of his vision for the future. But it went along with a really healthy ego and perhaps the lack of an antitrust filter — thinking about how these words would appear years later tossed up on the screen in front of a jury.”

The latest Apple lawsuit is set to begin in Oakland on Tuesday. It involves older iPods which only played songs downloaded off CDs and sold on the iTunes Store. They didn’t play songs from competing stores. Consumers say Apple violated antitrust laws because in order of keeping their music they had to buy high priced tracks rather than the cheaper music offered by other players. Apple discontinued the system since then.

The lead lawyer of the plaintiffs, Bonny Sweeney said:

“We will present evidence that Apple took action to block its competitors and in the process harmed competition and harmed consumers,”

Apple refused to make a comment on the matter.

Numerous e-mails have been made public. In one e-mail from 2003 sent to the executives of Apple, Jobs said his worries about Musicmatch, a company that was opening its own store for music. He said they needed to make sure Musicmatch downloaded music cannot be used on iPods and asked if the issue should concern him. These kinds of e-mails are why a witness in Apple lawsuits is Steve Jobs.

Several more e-mails are expected to be made public after the lawsuit.

Chromebooks have officially stepping out of the shadows to become the gift of choice over the Black Friday weekend, but it’s looking like some of the best deals of all have been held back for today. Yes, Cyber Monday is once again up us and has brought with it some pretty spectacular deals on the already bargain-basement Chrome computers the world is slowly but surely falling in love with.

So if you’re happy to forego the glory of Windows or Mac OS X in favor of Google’s Chrome OS, today’s the day to pick up an absolute steal on some of the best Chromebooks out there.

For example, the Cyber Monday deals being advertised as Staples are right now topping the bill – Acer’s CB3-111-C670 with an 11.6-inch screen is down $50 to just $149.99. If you’re after a slightly bigger display, the 13.3-inch Asus C300MA-DB01 can be picked up from BH Photo with a $30 price cut – now $179. Andover at Adorama, the popular Lenovo ThinkPad N20 with its 11.6-inch screen on sale for $189.99 – again, $30 cheaper than the usual selling price.

Still coming in at less than $200 is the Toshiba Chromebook 2, a 13.30-inch mid-tier machine with a price at Sam’s Club of $199 this Cyber Monday. One of the best of the lower-end deals, Samsung’s Chromebook XE303C12-A01US is down to $199 from the normal selling price of $199 and comes loaded with a pretty powerful Exynos 5 CPU.

Going up the ladder a little further, the 14-inch Nvidia Tegra K1-powered HP Chromebook 14will set you back a buck short of $300 if you buy it direct from HP, but has been given a Cyber Monday discount of $20 at Sam’s Club and $30 at Office Depot.

Right at the top of the table, the Acer C720-3605 has been modestly reduced in price at Office Depot to $309.99. For this, you’ll get 4G of RAM, an Intel Core i3 processor, a delightfully capable battery and 32GB of storage space – you’ll also save $30 on the everyday selling price. Alternatively, the Acer C720P-29554G01aii sells for the same $309 price at Adorama – a device that uses an Intel Celeron processor and packs only 2GB of RAM but ups the ante with a touchscreen.

Nintendo was recently granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that would allow the company to use custom software to emulate Game Boy games on other platforms. The patent lists specific examples such as a seat-back display for airline or train use or even on a smartphone.

Nintendo is in possession of a massive catalog of games that, if emulated and sold in an official capacity in app stores, could likely result in a hefty revenue stream. But unfortunately for gamers, the Japanese gaming company doesn’t seem to be interested in doing so.

As GameSpot notes, the patent filing is simply an updated version of sorts of an older patent that was filed way back in 2000 and updated a couple of times over the years.

The new application was filed as a divisional application while the older versions were filed as a continuation. That said, the updated patent is likely just a way for Nintendo to keep the option in the cupboard for a rainy day.

Again, as the publication points out, Nintendo has insisted that they won’t be bringing their games to smartphones. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said earlier this year that their games were designed for their game machines and if they transferred them to smartphones as they are, customers wouldn’t be satisfied.

Of course, emulators have been available for smartphones in an unofficial capacity for quite some time, but I digress

Cyber Monday is officially hitting its stride right now and the deals are flowing like nobody’s business. As expected, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are pretty rare commodities on the whole…at least as far as discounts are concerned…but the good news is that Apple’s latest and greatest Smartphones haven’t been left entirely out of the fun at T-Mobile.

For the country’s biggest online shopping day, T-Mobile is offering a free upgrade to the next level of on-board storage for anyone buying an iPhone 6, 5S or 5C – the deal understandably only applying to the 16GB base-models.

But that’s not all, as there are some pretty decent cash discounts to be found in among the mix too. For example, head over to the T-Mobile website and you’ll find that Cyber Monday sales are limited to the 64GB and 128GB models only. Right now, buy the former of the two sans-service agreement and it’ll cost you $27.08 per month for two years with no deposit to pay – total price $649.92, or $100 less than the usual selling price.

As for the upper-end128GB model, sadly there’s no such generosity to speak of and T-Mobile is still asking $849.91 for the thing. So for Cyber Monday at least, the 64GB version represents a much sweeter buy as for the duration of the promotion it’s a full $200 less pricey than its bigger brother.

For those happy to deal with last year’s specs and features for a little while longer, the 64GB iPhone 5S is also down a solid $50 or so at T-Mobile. While stocks last, the 5S can be picked up with no deposit and 24 payments of $24.99, which equates to an outright purchase price of $599.76. Interestingly, this is the same price as the 32GB version of the 5S which hasn’t been lavished with any Cyber Monday discounts.

Add another $50 into the mix however and you could take home the 64GB version of the iPhone 6, so it’s hard to see the appeal of T-Mobile’s 5S for today at least.

Last but not least, the 32GB version of the iPhone 5C is looking pretty attractive with a price of $449.76 – the price you’d generally be looking at for the 8GB version.

That’s about the size of things for now – discounts of $50 and $100 might not be the most thrilling in Cyber Monday stakes, but when slapped on Apple’s newest iPhones take on a whole new sense of significance.

While Amazon’s Fire TV Stick goes back to its base price, the Roku Streaming Stick and Google Chromecast get price cuts for the holidays. The Chromecast is now just $23.
(Photo : Image courtesy of Amazon)

Roku and Google have both slashed the prices of their streaming TV sticks for the holidays, placing a little more heat on the Fire TV Stick after Amazon’s dongle returned back to $40 from a half-off promotion for Prime users.

The Roku Streaming Stick has fallen from $50 to $40 and Google’s Chromecast has enjoyed an even deeper discount, moving from $35 to $23. While Amazon is selling Google’s streaming TV stick at a price lower than its own device, BestBuy is selling the Fire TV Stick for $25.

After offering the Fire TV Stick for $20 to prime members, the back-ordered streaming TV stick is back to $40. The low price proved to be irresistible to a large number of consumers, as Amazon sold out of Fire TV Sticks and doesn’t expect to be able to fulfill new orders until Jan. 15, 2015.

“Fire TV Stick has been our most successful device launch ever. We built a ton of these, but customer demand still outpaced our supply,” said Dave Limp, senior VP, Amazon Devices.

The Fire TV Stick’s $20 promotional price helped the device gain ground on the Chromecast and the Roku Streaming Stick, which comes from a storied line of streaming set-top boxes. Roku launchecd its first streaming “Netflix box,” the Roku DVP, back in may of 2008.

While Roku has been in the streaming hardware business longer than Google and Amazon, the Roku Streaming Stick faces its toughest competition in the form of true peers that are aggressively priced.

Like other Roku products, the Roku Streaming Stick boasts over 1,800 channels — most of the channels are collections of on-demand videos from websites, however. The Roku has a larger selection of games than the Chromecast and it offers HBO Go, an app that’s missing on the Fire TV Stick.

The Chromecast stands out from the others with its ability to “cast” content from a computer to a TV. Google’s streaming TV stick also enables users to interact with its user interface via smartphones and tablets, making it easier to search through large pools of content like the ones Hulu and Netflix maintains.

The power and storage space of the Fire TV Stick helps it stand out among its rivals. Amazon’s streaming TV stick’s 1 GB of RAM is double what Roku and Google offer, its 8 GB of storage space is four times what the Chromecast offers and its dual-core processor positions it better for tackling multiple processes than the others.

Remote control for virtualized desktops

Samsung has surprisingly opted to hang onto its current head of mobile JK Shin, despite rumours that he was for the chop after the mobile division underperformed all year.

Reports suggested last week that Shin would be ousted in favour of appliances and telly boss BK Yoon because sales of Sammy’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S5, were more than a little disappointing.

According to the WSJ, S5 sales were 40 per cent below the Korean company’s projections and 50 per cent lower in China.

But the Samsung Group’s heir apparent and acting chair Jay Y Lee opted to keep Shin on for now, with BK Yoon staying on as consumer electronics chief and components boss Kwon Oh-hyun also staying put. The guy taking responsibility for the poor mobile sales is DJ Lee, one of Shin’s top execs, who is president and head of sales and marketing for the mobile unit, familiar sources told the Wall Street Journal.

It’s possible that Samsung opted for a smaller reshuffle at the top to keep things stable for now, as Lee’s father and still technically chairman Lee Kun-hee remains in hospital after a heart attack in May. The firm may prefer to keep any big management changes on the back-burner until Jay Y Lee is fully in charge.

But Shin may also have earned some breathing room as the man in charge through the height of Sammy’s mobe popularity, having run the division since 2009.

“JK Shin has made big contributions in making Samsung Electronics the number one maker of mobile phones,” June Lee, the head of corporate communications at Samsung’s Corporate Strategy Office, told a group of reporters at a briefing following the announcement.

“The scope of personnel reshuffling is narrower than it has been before,” he added. ®

Intel will supply a chip for a new version of Google Glass that will be available next year, according to a news report.

The chip will replace one made by Texas Instruments and Intel will promote the new Glass device to workplace users such as hospital and factory staff, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report did not provide any details about the chip. Google did not immediately respond to a request for information. Intel Japan said it had no comment.

Earlier this year, Google said it was pushing the Internet-enabled head-mounted display for business uses with a program called Glass at Work, and said employees of oilfield services company Schlumberger are using Glass to improve safety and efficiency.

Intel, meanwhile, has been moving into wearables in recent months by working with other companies. At CES 2014, it showed off smart earbuds that can measure a runner’s heart rate.

In March, Intel purchased high-end health tracker maker Basis Science. The chip maker’s XMM6321 3G cellular radio was incorporated into MICA, a fashion bracelet that was unveiled in September.

In April, Google Glass was updated with Android KitKat, boosting its battery life, and has also been given a fashion makeover in an attempt to make it more attractive to consumers.

After Glass was made available to early adopters in 2012, the search giant released the wearable for public sale in the U.S. in May with a price tag of $1,500.

PARIS (AP) — In France, workers aren’t the only ones who take to the streets to protest — their bosses do, too.

Several thousand French business owners, particularly from small companies, demonstrated Monday in Paris to plead with the government to simplify regulations and make it easier and cheaper to hire.

The cost of six geese-a-laying spiked considerably this year, while most of the items in the carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” saw little to no increase, according to the 31st annual PNC Wealth Management Christmas Price Index.

A set of gifts in each verse of the song would set you back $27,673 in stores, an increase of less than $300 ? or 1 percent ? from last year. The FAA is working on educating drone operators about its set of rules regulating the use of unmanned aircraft to ensure flight safety and prevent the collision of drones and manned aircraft.
(Photo : Maurizio Pesce)

The growing consumer drone industry is still in its emergent years, but Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Michael Huerta says the agency already has regulations in place to ensure safety in the skies.

Huerta says the agency already has rules that prohibit operators of personal drones from flying into airports and soaring over 400 feet in the air. However, the lack of education and lenient enforcement of these rules have allowed drone operators to keep on breaking them. A report released by the agency says pilots report seeing drones flying dangerously close to large aircraft around 25 times per month, with some flying as high as 2,000 feet in the air. Huerta says the rules were set in place after an increased number of incidents were reported since February, with 25 cases where the pilots were forced to change their course.

“The thing that I am most concerned about is doing everything we can to avoid conflicts between aircraft – whether they’re drones or commercial airliners,” Huerta tells ABC News. “If you’re using an unmanned aircraft, you need to stay away from an airport, you need to stay below 400 feet and you need to maintain line of sight.”

The rules are in line with an aviation principle called “see and avoid,” where pilots exert all effort to see everything within the vicinity of the aircraft and take action to avoid whatever is hovering too close to prevent collision. At the same time, Huerta says he recognizes the potential of the use of drones in business and in surveillance, and understands why drone advocates are calling for the free and open use of unmanned drones.

“We have a plan for a staged and thoughtful integration of unmanned aircraft where we look at lower risk uses first, and then gradually work to others,” Huerta tells CNN.

A major challenge for the FAA is to spread awareness about the existence of the rules. Huerta says the agency has been partnering with drone clubs and associations such as the Model Aeronautics Association to educate flyers of personal drones, who are most likely not licensed pilots, about the dangers of flying next to larger aircraft.

“(A) big part of what we’re doing is educating people,” Huerta says. “These are very high performance aircraft, and they are difficult to see and this is one of the big challenges, and so that’s why the rules require that people stay away from airports.”

Aside from the current rules, the FAA is expected to craft additional rules that take into account the regulation of drones weighing lower than 55 pounds, as well as aircraft certification and the operator’s qualifications. The FAA is also working on a set of rules covering commercial drones, such as the delivery drones being tested by websites such as Amazon and Google.

Moody’s Investors Service on Monday downgraded Japan’s sovereign debt rating by one notch to A1, citing rising uncertainty over the country’s ability to hit its debt-reduction goal.

The announcement briefly sent the yen to a seven-year low against the dollar and pushed 10-year Japanese government bond (JGB) futures down by 10 ticks.

The downgrade came less than two weeks before Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe seeks re-election at a snap poll where his stimulus policies and a decision to delay a second sales tax hike will be among the key campaign issues.

The jury is out over whether Abe’s strategy will revive the economy and restore the country’s tattered finances.

“This is particularly bad for Abe because the opposition can attack him for this before the election,” said Hiroshi Miyazaki, senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.

The U.S. rating agency said the outlook was stable.

Tom Byrne, regional credit officer of Moody’s, said the downgrade was closely linked to Abe’s decision to delay next year’s scheduled sales tax hike, which made it more challenging for Japan to achieve its target of reducing the primary budget deficit in fiscal 2020.

“There is concern that fiscal policy in its current state will not achieve the long-term fiscal goals,” he said.

ABE SAYS REMAINS COMMITTED

Hours before Moody’s announcement, Abe had stressed in a televised public debate that Japan remained committed to fiscal reform, and that the Bank of Japan’s ultra-loose policy was not aimed at monetising public debt.

But Moody’s warned that the BOJ’s efforts to achieve its 2 percent inflation target through aggressive money printing may eventually push up bond yields and raise government borrowing costs.

“Rising interest rates would increase expenditure and offset gains from revenue buoyancy,” it said, adding that there was increasing uncertainty about how quickly Abe can deliver his “third arrow” policies to boost Japan’s long-term growth.

Byrne said that while the BOJ’s stimulus policy was “unorthodox,” its benefits still outweighed the costs.

“If you take Abe’s three arrows and combine them, the third arrow of economic growth policies hasn’t been supportive yet,” he said. The first two arrows are aggressive monetary and fiscal stimulus deployed to end nearly two decades of deflation.

Japan’s A1 rating is one notch lower than China and South Korea, and four lower than the United States and Germany, which have retained their top Aaa ratings.

The Moody’s downgrade brings its Japan rating into line with that of Fitch and one notch below Standard and Poor’s.

Japan’s public debt, at twice the size of its economy, is larger than Italy’s or any other troubled euro-zone nation.

The country’s ample domestic savings have financed most of the debt so far, although analysts warn that a rapidly aging population will erode those savings in coming years.

The BOJ, under a massive stimulus launched in April last year and expanded on Oct. 31, bought more JGBs than the government issued last month, stoking fears of debt monetisation. (Editing by Mike Collett-White)

Russian manufacturers reported

improving conditions for a fifth month in November, exceeding

forecasts by economists as a weaker currency spurred output and

pushed input-price growth to the fastest in more than 16 years.

The Russia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to

51.7, the highest in more than a year, from 50.3 in October,

HSBC Holdings Plc said in a statement, citing data compiled by

Markit Economics. That exceeded all estimates in a Bloomberg

survey of six economists, whose forecasts ranged from 49.9 to

50.2. Readings above 50 indicate expansion.

“Input prices surged at a rate not yet seen in this

century,” Alexander Morozov, chief economist for Russia and the

Commonwealth of Independent States for HSBC in Moscow, said in

the statement. “Manufacturers either benefit from substitution

of expensive imports or just misinterpret a temporary spike in

demand driven by the increased inflationary expectations.”

President Vladimir Putin is counting on domestic producers

taking advantage of the ruble’s record plunge to shield an

economy battered by nosediving oil prices and sanctions imposed

over the conflict in Ukraine. The surge of input costs raises

the likelihood of “double-digit” inflation in the coming

months and boosts the case for an increase in interest rates by

the central bank, according to HSBC.

The ruble has lost 29 percent against the dollar in the

past three months, the worst performer among 24 emerging-market

currencies tracked by Bloomberg. A lower exchange rate makes a

nation more competitive in selling goods.

Domestic Demand

Russian producers are benefitting from resilience in

domestic demand, which helped offset the 15th straight month of

falling new export business, according to HSBC. The

manufacturing industry has strengthened since July following

eight months of contraction as output and new orders increased,

it said.

Industrial output grew 2.9 percent in October, the most

since November 2012, expanding for a second month after zero

growth in August, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The

economy of the world’s biggest energy exporter expanded 0.7

percent from a year earlier in the third quarter, slowing less

than forecast, even as the central bank said last month that

growth may be near zero next year.

The economy remains hamstrung by the biggest capital

outflow since 2008 and the fastest inflation in more than three

years. The central bank in October brought its key interest rate

to the highest since it was introduced in September 2013.

Consumer-price growth accelerated to 8.3 percent in

October, the fastest since July 2011. Policy makers have raised

their main rate four times by a cumulative 400 basis points

since March to rein in inflation.

“Rising prices at manufacturers predicts the continuation

of fast growth on consumer prices as well,” Morozov said. “The

pass-through effect from the weaker currency on costs and output

inflation is stronger this time, compared to the one observed in

the first half this year on the back of the first round of ruble

weakening.”

LONDON (Reuters) – Oil prices hit five-year lows on Monday as slowing factory activity in China and Europe added to the impact of OPEC’s decision to maintain supply, hammering resource-linked stocks and currencies.

Russia’s rouble was down 8 percent from Friday’s Moscow close, though its losses were almost halved after what traders said may have been intervention by the central bank. The rouble remained on track for its steepest one-day fall since 1998, when a financial crisis led Russia to devalue the currency and default on its debt.

The Malaysian ringgit, also oil-dependent, hit a record low and was set for its biggest two-day fall since the 1997-8 Asian financial crisis.

Plunging prices for oil and other commodities raised fears of deflation, especially in the euro zone and Japan, and the prospect of looser monetary policy pushed the yen to a seven-year low against the dollar.

The yen took another brief hit after Moody’s Investors Service cut Japan’s credit rating.

Mining and oil firms led European shares lower, though airlines, which benefit from cheaper fuel, rose. Wall Street was set to open weaker, according to stock index futures.

“Over-optimistic global growth forecasts have been pared back, and probably rightly so, and also China has come back on to the radar. And that of course has become a big driver for a lot of commodity prices,” said Neil Williams, chief economist at fund manager Hermes in London.

World oil prices are down 40 percent since June, largely on abundant supply. OPEC last week declined to cut production to raise prices. Brent crude fell as low as $67.53, its lowest since October 2009, before picking up to $69.80.

“The market is still very much in panic mode,” said Energy Aspects’ chief oil analyst Amrita Sen.

Chinese purchasing managers (PMI) data showed manufacturing slowed in November, suggesting the world’s second biggest economy was still losing momentum. Factory activity also slowed in France and Germany.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index fell 0.5 percent. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 2 percent, hitting six-week lows. Emerging market shares tracked by MSCI fell 1.5 percent.

However, Tokyo’s Nikkei stocks index hit its highest close for more than seven years as cheap oil lifted airlines.

Yields on low-rated euro zone government bonds dipped as investors bet the European Central Bank, which meets on Thursday, would eventually deliver more stimulus. The five-year five-year forward — the ECB’s favourite measure of market inflation expectations — dropped 4 basis points on Monday to 1.74 percent.

The euro was flat at $1.2456 on Monday. The yen, which hit a low of 119.15 to the dollar after the ratings cut, was last at 118.47, up 0.1 percent.

Gold fell more than 2 percent at one point to $1,142.90 per ounce, a more than three-week low, after Swiss voters rejected a proposal to force the central bank to more than double its gold reserves.

The metal later rebounded to $1,172.47, up 1 percent on the day, with demand boosted by the cut to Japan’s credit rating.

The Swiss National Bank had said the proposal could threaten its 1.20 Swiss franc cap against the euro.

The franc dipped to 1.2030 per euro, a three-week low, though some analysts say the prospect of looser ECB monetary policy could put the cap under pressure again.

A new digital cookie program lets Girl Scouts make and track sales digitally. Now you can have your Thin Mints shipped straight to your house.
Lori Grisham, USA TODAY Network

Whether your favorites are Samoas or Thin Mints, cookie season just got easier for customers with new technology.

The Girl Scouts of the USA are going digital to sell their famous goodies after almost 100 years of traditional in-person transactions.

The new program, called Digital Cookie, allows Scouts to take orders via e-mail. For the Web version, customers can visit a scout’s personal cookie Web page that tracks cookie sales, days remaining and percentage of goal reached. Parents must approve the content of the page, according to the Scouts.

“It allows you to reach customers that you would not reach otherwise,” says Lauren Tinglin, 15, of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. She can start selling Dec. 12. Tinglin has family in Georgia and Florida that she plans to reach out to digitally this year.

The girls learn about e-mail marketing, finance and online communication through the program.

“I think it helps me organize my life in a way. It has you set goals,” Tinglin said. “I think it will help me grow as a person and a future businesswoman.”

The mobile app, used in some areas, allows credit card processing and direct shipping.

Kaeleigh Sturgeon,15, of the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey, says the best part of the mobile app is its portability.

“Before, when we would keep track of our sales, we usually would use an Excel spreadsheet on the computer, but I carry my phone with me all the time and it is a lot easier to pull something up on my phone than go home and pull up a spreadsheet on my computer,” Sturgeon says.

She may be tempted to sell some boxes during lunch at school when her sales start, since she is hoping to reach the 10,000-box mark over the span of her long Girl Scout career.

But the old-fashioned ways of doing business with door-to-door sales and girls stationed outside retail stores aren’t history. Digital just adds a “new layer,” says Kelly Parisi, chief communications executive of GSUSA.

“We are girl-led and girl-driven. We go where girls are, and girls are digital natives,” Parisi says. “The digital component will enhance the sales, and the byproduct will be a larger social imprint from the girls.”

All the net revenue from cookie sales stay with the Scout council that sponsors the sale. Girls decide how to spend their troop cookie money and reinvest it in their communities.

The majority of the 112 Girl Scout councils across the USA are testing the program during this cookie season. More councils are expected to be on board by the end of 2015, according to the Girl Scouts.

There were quite a few good deals to be had on Black Friday this year, but as in recent years some of the best deals of the holiday season won’t be found on the day after Thanksgiving. In recent years, Cyber Monday, the online equivalent to Black Friday, has eclipsed the Friday before Thanksgiving as the day to find the best deals.

This year appears to be no exception, particularly when it comes to cell phones and TVs. Here are a few of the ones you should watch.

Unlike Black Friday, there doesn’t appear to be many crazy cheap “doorbusters” featuring 32 or 40-inch no-name brands under $150. There are some significant discounts on TVs from well-known manufacturers like LG, Sharp, Sony, Samsung and Vizio. Best Buy will be selling a 42-inch Sharp 1080p LED HDTV for $299.99 (an $180 discount from its usual price) while Target will be bundling a $20 gift card with the purchase of a 39-inch Vizio 1080p LED HDTV for $349.99 and a $30 gift card with the purchase of a Samsung 40-inch 1080p Smart LED HDTV for $379.99 (a $250 discount). Dubbing this new week after Thanksgiving “Cyber Week,” Target will be offering discounts up until December 6th.

Similar to Target and its own Black Friday deals, Amazon will also be spreading out its Cyber Monday deals into its own “Cyber Week” that has already begun on the company’s site and runs throughout the week. As with Black Friday, Amazon will be posting new “Lightning Deals” to its Cyber Monday site every 10 minutes during this time. While the good news is the deals extend for more than a single day, it can be frustrating for shoppers as Amazon hasn’t said when exactly each deal would run (though the company does have an “upcoming” tab which is worth periodically checking to stay up-to-date on when the company will be putting certain products on sale). Among the deals to look out for on Amazon include 40-inch 1080p LED HDTVs from Samsung and Sony for $298.

In a bid to attract more smartphone shoppers, Amazon will also be offering “exclusive Lightning Deals” on Cyber Monday to users of the company’s apps on iOS, Android or the company’s own Fire OS (the software that power Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets and Fire Phone smartphone).

Beyond TVs, there are also a variety of deals to be had for other electronics, particularly off-contract smartphones. Motorola will be offering $140 off the off-contract price of its latest Moto X, bringing the device’s starting price down to $360. Motorola will offer prospective buyers a window on Cyber Monday to register at Motorola.com to receive a discount code. Registration will open at 11:00 a.m. CT and the company plans to keep the deal running until supplies last or 5:00 p.m. CT Monday evening. Discount codes must be redeemed by December 15 at 11:59 p.m. CT, giving buyers a bit more time to take advantage of the discounted pricing.

OnePlus, a startup company out of China that made waves in tech circles earlier this year by offering a powerful smartphone for a low cost, will be making its smartphone, the OnePlus One, available to all buyers on Cyber Monday. It previously was only available to those who had an invitation that could only be obtained from someone else who had already purchased the device. The phone runs Android and features a 5.5-inch, 1080p HD display, quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM as well as a 5-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel rear camera. Unlike the Moto X, which can be bought off-contract for any of the major US carriers, the OnePlus One is sold unlocked and will only work on T-Mobile or ATT in the US. It’s available in a 16GB white version for $299 or a 64GB black version for $349.

There aren’t many new deals for the iPhone on Cyber Monday, but those with T-Mobile will also be able to buy a 64GB iPhone 6 for the price of a 16GB iPhone 6, an $100 savings. T-Mobile will also be offering a 64GB iPhone 5S for the price of a 32 GB 5S and a 32GB iPhone 5C for the price of an 8GB 5C. T-Mobile’s deal begins at 12:01 a.m. PT on the company’s Cyber Monday site.

For those looking for portable chargers, accessory maker PowerSkin will be offering its PoP’n battery packs for one cent (plus shipping) with the promo code “penny.” The battery packs usually cost between $49.99 and $59.99 and are designed to attach to the back of either an iPhone (4/4S or 5/5S) or Android device and give your phone an additional 70% of battery life. The company’s new PoP’n 2 designed for the iPhone 6/6 Plus is not included in this Cyber Monday deal. The chargers come in a variety of colors and the deal will run throughout Cyber Monday on PowerSkin’s website, though purchases are limited to one per email address.

Best Buy will also be offering 50% off all myCharge power banks including the Hub series, now priced between $34.99 and $64.99 depending on size, that includes built-in Lightning and microUSB cables to easily connect an iPad, iPhone or Android/Windows Phone device.

Other deals worth keeping in mind: Google will be offering the Chromecast for $25 and bundled with 90 days free of the company’s Google Play Music service and 2 free months of Hulu Plus, while rival Roku will offer the Roku LT box for $29.99 ($10 off) and its Roku streaming stick for $39.99 (also $10 off) on its site bundled with 2 free months of Rdio Unlimited streaming. For those looking for a deal on a game system, Walmart will have a $449.99 PS4 bundle that includes the console, Lego Batman 3, LittleBigPlanet, an extra controller and your choice of one of 12 games, including The Lego Movie Videogame and Madden NFL 15.

One person has died and more than 50 others are missing after a South Korean fishing vessel sank in the Bering Sea off the coast of Russia’s far eastern Chukotka region, officials say.

The 1,753-tonne Oryong 501 operated by South Korea’s Sajo Industries went down in waters off Russia’s far east at 2:20pm local time, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

“When the fish were being hauled in, the vessel was hit by a wave,” Artur Rets, the head of the maritime rescue service in Russia’s far eastern port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, said.

He said rescuers had managed to pull eight people out of the water so far, including one who had died.

“According to our data there were 62 people on board,” Mr Rets said.

“The fate of the others is not known.”

The South Korean fisheries ministry said the trawler was carrying one Russian inspector, 11 South Koreans, 13 Filipinos and 35 Indonesians.

One Korean sailor was confirmed dead while seven people including the Russian inspector and six foreign crew members were rescued, a ministry spokeswoman said.

“The ship tilted slowly after taking in water, forcing crew members to abandon it,” the spokeswoman said.

“Several vessels from nearby waters were involved in search and rescue efforts, but the operation has been hampered by bad weather.”

NATO’s pledges to protect its eastern

flank against Russia will run into financial reality tomorrow

when foreign ministers from budget-stressed governments weigh

how to share the burden.

A “robust debate” is under way in the 28-nation alliance

over who will pay to rebuild the eastern defenses that were

scaled back after the Cold War, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas

Lute said.

“We haven’t decided where the bill’s going to fall,” Lute

told reporters in Brussels today. “You can imagine that that’s

a big deal. Forces of that size, at that readiness, are not

inexpensive. NATO has got to come to grips with costs.”

Germany, Norway and the Netherlands will take the lead in

fielding a brigade in early 2015 to serve as the nucleus of the

planned rapid-reaction “spearhead” which would be deployable

within days in response to a threat to the North Atlantic Treaty

Organization’s eastern borders.

A commitment to the high-readiness force went along with

American complaints about declining European defense budgets at

a summit of allied leaders in Wales in September, the first

since Russia seized Crimea and sent troops into eastern Ukraine.

The U.S. contribution to the force remains to be decided,

Lute said. NATO is counting on the U.S. to provide airlift

capacity, which is in short supply in Europe.

The planned task force of 3,000 to 5,000 troops requires

NATO to dust off concepts for rapid-response warfare that fell

into disuse during two decades of operations away from the home

front, in places like the Balkans, Afghanistan and Libya.

Interim Force

The three-nation interim readiness force puts NATO ahead of

schedule in meeting its self-defense commitment, Secretary

General Jens Stoltenberg said. Defense ministers will fill in

the details at a meeting in February.

“We are committed to implementing the plan, on time and in

full,” Stoltenberg told reporters.

Other eastern reinforcements include stepped-up air

policing over the Baltic Sea, troop rotations into the Baltic

states and Poland, and more frequent military exercises. NATO

announced those steps in April and will formally agree to

continue them at tomorrow’s meeting of foreign ministers.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: A representative for an American couple cleared Sunday by a Qatari appeals court of wrongdoing in the death of their 8-year-old adopted daughter but blocked from leaving the country has blasted a continued travel ban against them as “institutional kidnapping.”

Eric Volz told The Associated Press that Matthew and Grace Huang hope to leave the Gulf nation Monday but have been told by the U.S. government that a number of procedural steps must still be completed before they can depart.

A Qatari appeals court on Sunday overturned a child endangerment conviction against the Huangs over the death of daughter Gloria and said they were free to leave the country. They were stopped at the airport as they tried to depart hours later.

Qatari officials have not commented.

The United Nations World Food Program on Monday suspended a food voucher program serving more than 1.7 million Syrian refugees, citing a funding crisis after many donors failed to meet their commitments.

Cutting the program, which provides Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt with electronic vouchers to buy food in local shops, means that “many families will go hungry,” the U.N. agency said in a statement.

“The suspension of WFP food assistance will be disastrous for many already suffering families,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, adding it will also “endanger the health and safety of these refugees and will potentially cause further tensions, instability and insecurity in the neighboring host countries.”

Syria’s 3 ½-year-long civil war has killed more than 200,000 people and touched off a massive humanitarian crisis, forcing more than 3 million to seek refuge abroad and displacing another 6.5 million within the country. Trying to meet the needs of those affected by the crisis has put a tremendous strain on countries that have taken in refugees, as well as organizations that provide humanitarian assistance.

Cousin said that many donors have not honored their commitments, leaving the agency’s Syria emergency operations in critical need of funding. WFP said it requires $64 million to support Syrian refugees in December alone.
