Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson‘s eldest son Chester “Chet” Hanks recently revealed that he entered rehab for a cocaine addiction, from which is he now 50 days sober.

“I’ve been struggling with substance abuse since I was 16 years old,” the “Do It Better” rapper wrote. “Finally at the age of 24 I decided to get some help. With 50 days of sobriety under my belt, I can honestly say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”

He continued: “I’m thankful for my family and everybody that cares about me, including my fans. I’ve been blessed with the programs of AA and NA which allow me to rise above this disease. I’m learning to accept my faults and be ok with being human. If anybody that sees this struggles with addiction, feel free to reach out. Thank you all for the love and support! GOD IS REAL!!!”

The accompanying video message explained why he finally decided to publicly address his addiction. “I have an announcement: A tabloid is about to run a piece on me being in rehab for a cocaine addiction. It’s true,” he says. “I’m currently 50 days clean and sober from everything, including alcohol.” (Star magazine planned to reveal his drug addiction in its Dec. 8. issue.)

Chet is big brother to Truman and is the younger half-brother of Colin — Tom’s son with his first wife Samantha Lewes.

The rapper has spoken candidly about being raised by famous parents, saying he wants to make it on his own as an artist. “My parents told me, ‘If you want money, then you can come to us and then we can give you a job,'” Chet mused of being raised in the Hanks household in a 2012 interview. “When I was a little kid, it was washing my dad’s car.”

He cited his ancestors’ struggle coming to America. (Rita’s father Allan Wilson escaped a Bulgarian prison camp.) “My grandfather came into this life with nothing, and he put food on his plate,” Chet told NY Mag. “I came into this life with a f—ing banquet in front of me. And I don’t want to digest having eaten that banquet. To me? To just remain at this level? It’s a failure. An utter f—ing failure.”

As for the haters who simply identify him as “Tom Hanks’ son?”

“I’d say nothing,” mused Chet, who was a Northwestern student at the time. “Actions speak louder than words. It’s like this, man—let’s say hypothetically that I came up with the cure for cancer. Here’s what it would say in my obituary: ‘Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, came up with the cure for cancer.'”
