He’s known as one of the world’s nicest A-listers.
But it doesn’t look like Hugh Jackman’s character in Chappie will be earning a similar reputation.
The first trailer for the flick, director Neil Blomkamp’s follow up to District 9 and Elysium, reveals 46-year-old Hugh playing Vincent, a human fighting to destroy a humanised machine named Chappie.

A different side: Hugh Jackman dons a mullet in the debut trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie
In the story, Chappie is the first robot created that can think and feel, and is seen being raised like any other child – watching cartoons, learning how to speak and even being bullied by teens.
The robot, voiced by Sharlto Copley, is created by a scientist, played by Dev Patel, and parented by Watkin ‘Ninja’ Jones and Yolandi Visser of South African rap-rave duo Die Antwood.
But schoolyard bullies aren’t the only ones out to get him.
‘The problem with artificial intelligence is it’s way too unpredictable,’ Hugh’s character, Vincent, says, before adding in another scene ‘this robot has got to be removed.’
The trailer climaxes with a collage of action, gunshots and explosions, and Chappie is due to be released in March 2015.
Starring role: The flick is about Chappie, a robot created with human emotions that can think for itself
A normal boy: The trailer shows Chappie human- watching television, learning to speak and enduring bullying
Not having it: Hugh plays Vincent, who doesn’t trust artificial intelligence and wants Chappie destroyed
Hugh will likely soon begin the promotional trail for Chappie to help lead it to the level of financial success Neil Blomkamp’s previous films had – both District 9 and Elysium grossed over $200million worldwide.
But the Australian actor isn’t only focused on the silver screen, as he’ll soon take the stage for New York Broadway show The River.
He’s also spending time taking care of his health, recently undergoing treatment for this third bout of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the space of 12 months.
Speaking earlier this year at the premiere of X-Men: Days Of Future Past in Beijing, he said ‘I’m realistic about the future and it’s more than likely that I’ll have at least one more but probably many more [scares].’
‘Which is not uncommon for an Aussie, particularly from English stock, growing up in Australia – where I don’t remember ever being told to put sunscreen on,’ he added.
Don’t mess with the robot: The trailer climaxes with a collage of action, gunshots and explosions
Coming soon-ish: The film is due for a March 2015 release, and is Neil Blomkamp’s follow up to District 9 and Elysium
